India: Guidelines for E-Commerce Food Business Operators

On 12 November 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) convened a meeting with e-commerce platform providers to address concerns regarding food safety violations, particularly those related to expiry and best before dates of prepackaged food products.FSSAI emphasised that food business operators (FBOs) must ensure that food items sold on their platforms have a minimum shelf life of of 30 percent or 45 days before expiry at the time of delivery to the consumer. Additionally, any product claims made on e-commerce platforms must be consistent with the information provided on product labels and adhere to Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
